Older dogs, big dogs and dogs who sleep hard on cold floors all need a bed with real support under them. This one is built on a 16 cm thick base of egg crate foam, the bumpy, open-cell foam that spreads your dog's weight evenly and lets air move underneath, so it stays comfortable night after night instead of flattening into a thin cushion. Plush bolsters run along the back and both sides for a chin rest or a wall to lean against, and the front stays low and open so stiff legs can step straight in.

The base wears a soft velvet cover with cream piping, the top and bolsters are long shaggy faux fur, and a thin waterproof liner sits between the cover and the foam to keep spills and accidents out of the foam. The whole cover unzips and goes in the washing machine on a cold cycle, and the non-slip underside keeps the bed in place on floorboards and tiles.

Measure your dog lying stretched out from nose to the base of the tail and pick a size whose sleeping area is a little longer. As a rough guide, M 76 cm suits medium dogs up to about 14 kg such as a cocker spaniel or beagle, L 91 cm suits dogs up to about 25 kg such as a border collie or staffy, and XL 107 cm suits large dogs up to about 36 kg such as a labrador or golden retriever. The sizes are outside measurements; the bolsters take up some of the space.

Vacuum off loose hair, unzip the cover, and wash it on a cold gentle cycle or by hand with no bleach. Air dry it fully out of strong sun before zipping it back over the foam. The foam itself should not go in the machine; wipe the liner with a damp cloth if needed.

The foam is vacuum packed for shipping. Take it out of the bag, fit it into the cover, and give it up to 72 hours to spring back to its full 16 cm height. Pressing and patting the foam helps it recover faster.
