Bigger and older dogs sink straight through soft fibre beds until they are lying on the floor. This bed gives them something firm to lie on instead: a layer of gel-infused memory foam over a high-density egg crate foam base, so their weight is spread evenly from shoulders to hips. Padded bolsters run along the back and both sides like a little sofa, giving them a wall to lean on and somewhere to rest a chin, and the open front means no climbing in.

Under the soft grey linen-look cover sits a waterproof inner liner that keeps accidents, wet coats and drool away from the foam. The cover zips off and goes in the washing machine, and the non-slip base stops the bed sliding on floorboards and tiles. The foam can be flipped, with memory foam on one side and egg crate foam on the other. It arrives vacuum packed, so give it up to 48 hours to fully expand.

Measure your dog lying stretched out from nose to the base of the tail and pick a size whose sleeping area is a little longer. As a rough guide: S suits small dogs up to about 9 kg such as a cavalier or jack russell, M dogs up to about 16 kg such as a beagle or cocker spaniel, L dogs up to about 34 kg such as a border collie or Labrador, and XL dogs up to about 45 kg such as a golden retriever or German shepherd.

A waterproof liner sits between the outer cover and the foam, so spills, wet coats and small accidents stay off the foam. The outer cover itself is fabric and will get wet, so unzip it, wash it and let it dry fully before putting it back on.

The foam is vacuum packed for delivery. Take it out of the bag, unfold the foam, put it back in the cover and leave it for up to 48 hours to fully expand before your dog uses it.
