Plenty of dogs skip the fancy bed and sprawl on the floor, then curl up against the edge of whatever is nearest. This bed suits both. It is a thick, flat rectangle with a puffy rim all the way round, so stretchers have room to lie out and curlers have a soft edge to tuck into or rest a chin on. It sits neatly beside the couch, at the end of your bed or on the floor of a dog crate. Cats like it too.

The top is a soft waffle-texture plush with a fine raised grid that feels warm and springy under paws, and the centre is stitched into soft tufted squares so the filling stays spread out instead of bunching to one end. Underneath, a dark non-slip base helps it stay put on floorboards and tiles. Pick from seven sizes, from a cat or toy breed bed to one big enough for a labrador.

As a rough guide: XS 40 x 30 cm suits cats and toy breeds, M 65 x 50 cm a jack russell or shih tzu, L 80 x 55 cm a beagle or cavoodle, XL 95 x 65 cm a border collie or spaniel, 2XL 110 x 75 cm a labrador, and 3XL 122 x 85 cm larger retrievers and huntaways. If your dog sprawls, go up a size.

Yes, it makes a comfy crate mat. Measure the inside floor of your crate and choose the size just smaller, so the bed lies flat without bending up the sides. For example, the L 80 x 55 cm suits most 36 inch crates, the XL 95 x 65 cm most 42 inch crates and the 2XL 110 x 75 cm most 48 inch crates.

Vacuum or brush off loose hair first, then wash the bed on a gentle cold cycle or by hand, with no bleach. The bigger sizes may need a large front loader. Let it air dry completely, out of strong sun, then pat the rim and squares back into shape.
