Cats scratch. That is not negotiable. Where they scratch is, and this oval sisal scratcher gives them somewhere better than the arm of your couch. The top is tightly woven natural sisal, the rough fibrous stuff cats love to dig their claws into, stretched over a sturdy density board base so it does not flex or fall apart. Around the outside is a grey flecked linen weave that looks more like a piece of furniture than a pet accessory, so it can sit in the lounge without apology.

The clever bit is the shape. The sisal top is dished, curving down towards the middle, so once your cat has finished scratching it curls up in the hollow and sleeps there. One thing on the floor instead of two, and the scratching spot and the napping spot are the same spot, which makes it far more likely to get used. Cats are drawn to it because the woven sisal feels good under their claws and the low walls give them something to lean against.

Size guide:
Approx. 41 x 31 x 10 cm. Suits one kitten or adult cat up to around 6 kg curled up. Larger cats will still scratch it happily but may prefer to sleep elsewhere.

Care: vacuum or brush the sisal to remove loose fibres and fur. Spot clean the outer fabric with a damp cloth. Keep it dry. Sisal is a natural material and will fluff and wear with use, which is exactly what it is for.

Most cats take to sisal quickly because the texture is close to tree bark. Place it near the furniture they currently scratch, or in a spot they already nap in, and give them a few days. A pinch of catnip on the sisal speeds things up. Once they have scratched it a couple of times it smells like theirs and they keep coming back.

It measures about 41 x 31 x 10 cm and comfortably fits one kitten or adult cat up to around 6 kg curled up. Bigger cats can still use it for scratching, and many will squeeze in for a nap anyway, but if you have a large breed such as a Maine Coon it will be a scratcher first and a bed second.

Vacuum or brush the sisal to lift loose fibres and fur. Wipe the outer fabric with a damp cloth and let it dry. Do not soak it, as the base is board and the sisal is natural fibre. Loose bits of sisal on the floor are normal as it wears in.
