New puppy, new teeth, and suddenly everything in the house is a chew toy. The KONG Puppy is the same snowman shape as the red KONG Classic, made in a softer natural rubber formula that is gentle on baby teeth and sore gums while still holding up to a determined little chewer. It gives them something they are allowed to chew, which is half the battle in the first few months.

It is hollow, so it doubles as a treat toy. Smear a little peanut butter inside, add a few pieces of puppy kibble, or fill it and freeze it for something cool on teething gums. Working the food out keeps a puppy busy and calm, which makes it a favourite for crate training, settling in at night and those first stretches of being home alone. Thrown, it bounces unpredictably and starts a chase. It is made in the USA from non toxic materials and goes in the top rack of the dishwasher.

Which rubber? KONG makes this shape in four formulas. Puppy (this one, in pink) is the softest, for teething pups and beginning chewers. Senior (purple) is a gentle rubber for older dogs. Classic (red) is for average adult chewers, and Extreme (black) is for power chewers. Once your dog's adult teeth are in, usually around nine months, move them up to Classic.

Which size? Go by your puppy's weight and, when in doubt, size up. The toy should be too big to fit fully in their mouth. Remember they will grow, so if your pup is near the top of the range, choose the next size.

This is the Small, about 7 cm tall, which KONG recommends for puppies up to 9 kg. The toy should be too big for your puppy to fit fully in its mouth. Puppies grow fast, so if yours is already near 9 kg or is a large breed, go up to the Medium and keep this one for a smaller dog.

Puppy rubber is made for baby teeth. Once the adult teeth are through, usually around nine months, your dog's jaw is stronger and the softer Puppy rubber will wear faster. That is the time to switch to the red Classic, or the black Extreme for power chewers.

Puppy safe fillings such as a little xylitol free peanut butter, soaked puppy kibble, mashed banana or plain yoghurt. Freeze it for teething relief. Start with easy fillings so your puppy learns how it works, and keep portions small so treats do not replace meals.
